Evolution of the human diet has happened over millions of years and we have made the transition from eating foods that existed in nature to our current eating habits. Unnatural, processed foods and substances are infused in our current diet choice. The Paleo diet or caveman diet can be traced back to the Paleolithic Era and is a hunter gatherer based diet. Humans ate what occurred in nature including some meats, fish, vegetables, wild fruits, nuts and even mushrooms as during the Paleolithic Era, agricultural methods of farming were not available. Paleo which is short for Paleolithic allows this diet to bring eating back to its true roots as it incorporated the Paleolithic eating habits.
While on a Paleo diet what can be eaten? For consumption in the Paleo diet, natural oils are only satisfactory as processed oils are not passable. Good examples of natural fruit based oils are olive oil, avocado, coconut and almond oils. A very vital aspect of the Paleo diet is wild game. Grass fed animals are acceptable substitutes as this is not the Paleolithic period where everything is wild and lean.
Water is the only acceptable drink in the Paleo diet. Anything other than water would be considered cheating. Although some dispute that agave nectar is a natural substance available in nature, others disagree and conclude that agave nectar is only an agave based high fructose syrup. The only adequate sweetener is honey. Additionally, seasoning agents like salt, meat rubs, or poultry seasoning are not passable in the Paleo diet.
