Investing in Ottoman beds

Have you been looking at Ottoman beds recently and wondering if you should invest in one for your bedroom? Our bedrooms are usually a very personal place. It is our haven or sanctuary where we can rest and take some time out from our otherwise hectic lives.

Most of us want a comfortable calming room which is also practical. Yes a giant four poster bed may be what we dreamed of as kids but unless you are lucky enough to live in a huge home, there probably wouldn’t be much room for this piece of furniture. An ottoman sleeper on the other hand can offer the luxury associated with a four poster without using all the space available in your room.

Decorating your bedroom is not a new concept. In the ancient civilizations of Rome and Greece great care was taken when decorating the bed chamber. The bed itself was often extremely ornate with beautiful carved wooden features. The Egyptians were particularly renowned for their ornate beds while the Greeks favored the reclining couch similar to the ottoman sofa you often find in a modern living room. The Romans liked to have different beds for various occasions including a bridal bed which was often given pride of place in the center of the room. Privacy wasn’t as highly valued in those days as it is today!

The bed linen was made from the finest materials with quality silks and cotton being the fabrics of choice. The mattresses would often be made from goose or down feathers or if you were less well off, it may be stuffed with sheep’s wool.

In the Middle ages, it was common for numerous people to share a bedchamber in the interests of keeping warm. Privacy was not highly valued although the wealthier people did invest in large heavy curtains to surround the bed but this was done to keep out the cold more than anything else.

Thankfully bedroom customs have changed and there are now plenty of designs for you to choose from to decorate your room to your satisfaction. Ottoman beds are wonderful stylish pieces and can also provide valuable additional storage facilities. They can be expensive but you can find fantastic deals if you know where to shop!
